Squam Lake has formerly been known by many names. Keeseenunknipee, then shortened to Kesumpe around 1779. In the 1800s, it was renamed to Asquam, and finally Squam. The Squam shoreline is not packed with cottages, you will find open shorelines with large family estates, and the occasional Moose walking along the shoreline. In fact, it's so picturesque that the 1981 film On Golden Pond was filmed here on Squam Lake. Miles of the shoreline is in conservation never to be built on. Once you arrive it is a step back in time. Little Squam Lake is a 408-acre lake with a maximum depth of 84 feet, you can boat directly into big Squam. Little Squam takes on a winter wonderland life of its own, in the winter an airstrip is plowed across the lake for local pilots to land their planes.
