Windows ? Skylights and Loft Windows Ideas for 2017

One of the sales I had last year was a view home located in the gated community of Long Bay in Southdown Shores in Laconia.  Normally I don't write about individual homes but this home had loft windows.  These windows open up and you have a balcony. These were simply amazing and I had never seen anything like them before.

Loft Window in an Attic

The applications seem endless but they seem to fit best  in any attic or dormer location in a home.

The loft window in this home was in the an attic room that had a commanding view of the lake. The listing agent opened the window and the bottom half opened to a balcony and the top half was a roof section for the balcony, on the sides a fence/gate area folded into place.  To close a simple level was lifted and your loft window became a skylight.

How to Control Geese? Keeping them off your Lawn!

Goose Control: A Local Lakes's Solution

By: Don Damm, VLAP Monitor, Ashuelot Pond, Washington, NH

Geese have been a problem on my lawn for years, I have put a fences, string and let my dog loose to chase the messy geese away. I can't wait to try this simple solution they are using over in the

Washington NH area.

Canada Geese commonly spend their summer's nesting and feeding on New Hampshire's lakes and ponds. However, the public may not realize that geese feces can be hazardous to people's health when inhaled or ingested. Parasites found in geese feces are a concern, especially to those who are most susceptible including the elderly, children and pregnant or breastfeeding women. Additionally, at even higher risks are children with weakened immune systems and people with gastrointestinal problems and ulcers. The parasite of concern is called Cryptosporidium, which causes an illness with the following symptoms: watery diarrhea, dehydration, weight loss, stomach cramps, fever, nausea, and vomiting. For most people the symptoms would be relatively short, a day or two, however, for children they could last for weeks with medical treatment.

The Lake Ashuelot Estates Association at Ashuelot Pond in Washington, NH wants to share our experience with managing Canada Geese. A single goose can eat four pounds of grass (their favorite food) a day and create three pounds of fecal matter"¦that is about 30 pieces of goose poop. There are currently 26 geese on the lake which generate a lot of goose poop. We have a large association beach of approximately 5,500 square feet of sand and about an acre of grass which attracts the geese when they are hungry. Last year, a three year old girl became very sick after playing at the beach. The doctor believed the illness was associated with a parasite in the goose poop that was present on the beach or adjacent grassy area.

We have been working to prevent the geese from accessing the beach area for many years now. We have tried a variety of physical barrier techniques to keep the geese from getting onto the beach and grassy areas. However, these physical barrier techniques are not so practical on an active beach, and over time the geese usually figure a way around the barriers. The way we have effectively controlled the geese is by regularly spraying diluted grape juice on the grass, with prior coordination with the Dept. of Agriculture. The grape juice contains the chemical methyl anthranilate which makes the grass unpalatable to the geese. When the geese try to feed on the grass sprayed with grape juice it results in an unpleasant sensation in their mouths.

We have used a regular 100 percent two quart container of grape juice that you can buy for $2.50. Do not purchase grape drink. The two quart container is then diluted with two quarts of water. This mixture is poured into a five gallon agricultural sprayer, which you can buy for under $20.00. We use the light spray setting and the gallon of diluted grape juice covers the larger grassy area adjacent to the beach. The spraying effort is shared during the summer months with a number of volunteers. The spraying frequency varies based on weather conditions and on the grass cutting cycle. It appears to work on a two to three day cycle and spraying is done in the evening when the beach area is less occupied. Cutting of the grass may result in more frequent spraying, and we generally spray when the forecast is dry weather. If it does rain, spraying needs to be done the next day.

The Association's experience to date is that when a regular spraying cycle is maintained, the geese are not present. Generally, each spraying event takes about 20 to 25 minutes, because you usually will have visitors who are curious of what you are up to. It is almost like conducting a mini field educational course. As a back-up, we keep a bucket and shovel at the beach for volunteers to physically pick-up and remove the goose poop from the sandy beach.

America's best lake: And the winner is... Newfound Lake in NH!

America's best lake: And the winner is...

By Laura Bly, USA TODAY

Tahoe  - North America's largest and most popular alpine lake, a place Mark Twain once called "the fairest picture the whole earth affords" - is the champion in USA TODAY's recent survey. The poll generated more than 5,000 votes via Facebook and Twitter.

Newfound Lake Real EstateMichigan's Lake Charlevoix was runner-up among a field of 15 finalists nominated by regional magazine editors, with strong support for Alabama's Lake Martin, Missouri's Lake of the Ozarks and North Carolina's Lake Lure plus a sizeable number of votes for New York's Blue Mountain Lake, New Hampshire's Newfound Lake and Washington's Crescent Lake.

While we took some heat for ignoring the five Great Lakes, our intention was to spotlight some of the USA's smaller, less famous summer getaways.

So much for that idea: The winner, notes nominator Peter Fish , straddles the California-Nevada border and "draws a gazillion - that's what it feels like on a weekend, anyway" tourists who use it as a summer escape hatch."

But, Fish adds, Tahoe is "too stunning not to be experienced" - a sentiment echoed by aficionados like Dick Goodrick, a former Michigander who now lives in Dayton, Nev.

"The Sierra Mountains around Lake Tahoe clinch the deal," wrote Goodrick. "Year-round recreation, skiing, hiking, casinos, mountain bike riding, fishing, wake boarding, sailing on big boats, paddle wheel dinner/cruise boats, clear deep blue water, spawning salmon, zip-lining, historic homes to visit, and much more. No lake can match it."

As a former Southern Californian, I'm no stranger to Tahoe's multiple joys - and although I admit I'd rather listen to the call of a lonely loon than commune with a "gazillion" fellow admirers, I'm looking forward to revisiting some old haunts and discovering new ones for a story and photos that will appear in USA TODAY Travel on Aug. 10.

Should I buy a lakefront home or invest in the stock market?

Technically you should be doing both! Stocks are a wonderful way to plan for your retirement years or put money away for your children's education. Take note that financial advisors will always warn you stocks are for the long term and not for the faint of heart. What about a lake home investment. Currently interest rates are low giving you the perfect opportunity to invest in real estate. Real Estate should be a prominent part of your financial plan, we all purchase a home as an investment correct. Why not add to that investment with a lake home.

Squam Lake Buyers Information

Holderness, Sandwich, Ashland, Center Harbor, Moultonborough are surrounding towns.

Squam Lake is the second largest lake in New Hampshire  with a total area of over 6,700 acres. The 1981 film On Golden Pond  was filmed on Squam Lake and the Squam Lake Science Center is located in Holderness.  I have fond memories of the Squam Lake Science Center. Every year our family  would hike up Rattlesnake Mountain in Sandwich and then head over to the Squam Lake Science Center .  Salmon Fishing rocks on this lake ( big salmon ).   Unlike most of the lakes, Squam Lake is not home to a shoreline packed with cottages. You will find open shorelines with large family estates and an occasional Moose walking the shoreline.   A State Boat Ramp is located in Holderness next to the Science Center with easy access to Big Squam Lake and Little Squam.

Time to build memories with a lake home of your own!

Time to build memories with a lake home of your own!

Ashland, at the southern end Little Squam ( 408 acres ) , Little Squam lake feeds directly into big Squam. At the southern end of the lake you pass under a covered bridge to the Squam River and Marina.  Ashland has a small downtown area with restaurants, groceries and a hardware store.

Holderness is located with access to  Big Squam Lake and Little Squam Lake, Little Squam is the place to be in the winter months, they plow a air strip to land your plane and plow a path around the entire lake for skating.  Holderness has a small downtown with a restaurant, marina offering boat sales, rentals and fuel plus a great sandwich shop.

Sandwich is one of the largest towns in Carroll County. Along with having miles of shoreline you have an active artist community in the center of town and is home to the Sandwich Fair.  Historic buildings and plenty of open space.

Center Harbor, quiet New England town, the village area is located on the shores of Winnipesaukee.

Moultonborough, my favorite hiking trails are the Red Hills up to the fire tower or Castle in the Clouds where you can enjoy lunch at the famed castle.  The center of town is located off Route 25.

There are over 30 islands within the boundaries on Squam Lake. Many are owned by the association and visitors are welcome.

Squam Lake Real Estate prices range $450,000 for a seasonal 1 bedroom cottage to country estates built in the 1920's priced to $8 million. Most homes are priced in the $2.5 to $4.5 million dollar range.  Homes on this lake offer privacy with lots up to 25 acres and shorelines may reach 1000 or more feet. Much of the shoreline is rocky with a sandy bottom and the lake is surround by mountains for spectacular views and sunsets.
