Squam Lake profile and information

Lakefront Monday highlights different lakes in New Hampshire. This page is sponsored by Lady of the Lake Realty in Meredith NH. If you want information on a lake e-mail us for lake profile.

Squam Lake Information

Squam Lake has been known by many names. Keeseenunknipee, then shortened to Kesumpe around 1779. In the 1800s, it was renamed to Asquam, and finally Squam. Squam was the 1981 film site for On Golden Pond. Big and Little Squam Lakes are naturally spring-fed and connected by a channel in Holderness. Big Squam is NH second largest lake at 6,791 acres, Little Squam is 408 acres. Towns around the lake include Ashland, Holderness, Sandwich, Center Harbor, and Moultonborough. The lakes have 67 islands. There are no boating restrictions and the water quality is oligotrophic, the best.  The lake has a maximum depth of 98 feet but my advice is get a lake chart to navigate the rocky bottom.  While on the water boating expect to see lots of wooded shoreline and more woods driving around the lake. Most of the turn of the century estates sit back from the water.  The boat launch is located in Holderness along with a few commercial establishments, make sure you visit the Squam Lakes Science Center. In the winter major ski resorts are 40 minutes from Holderness and don’t miss ice harvesting every January. Squam Lake Homes for sale - view of squam lake

Squam Lake or Winnipesaukee - Which lake do you Prefer?

Winnipesaukee is our largest lake in the New Hampshire covering 44,400 acres while Squam is 6,791 acres. Both have excellent boating - sailing - fishing - snowmobiling - golf - hiking - access to ski resorts - entertainment

lake winnipesaukee real estate

E-mail or call us for a lake map

Winnipesaukee If go fast is your lifestyle Winnipesaukee is your lake, you can not only boat forever but visit the town docks of Alton, Meredith, Wolfeboro, Laconia and Center Harbor where you can shop and dine. You could leave the car behind for the entire summer and only venture out by boat.  Groceries to Hospitals are all a short walk from the towns docks.  The boating adventure is what draws the crowds to this big lake.  You have thousands of homes around the lake along with another thousand weekending on their boats at a marina.  All these homes equals over a hundred thousand boats and lots of chop on the water. Plus if the wind kicks up on the broads the largest section of the lake watch out. You can have 6 to 8 footers in minutes. I seem to be painting a grim picture for boating on the lake, not so. Meredith Bay on a typical Saturday you have a 2-3 foot chop, head over to Center Harbor into Moultonbough you can find plenty of calm waters to raft, water ski or tube with the family.  My sister in-law from NY was out on a boat ride with us.  Just as we went by Weirs Beach she said look at all the beautiful hotels!! Hotels? Those are homes on Governors Island. If you want to view spectacular architecture Winnipesaukee is the place. You can view homes priced from $750,000 to $25 million and a good chance you will run into a celebrity or two.

squam lake homes

NH Second Largest Lake

Squam A tranquil lake where the movie "On Golden Pond" was filmed.  Leave your cell phone behind, grab a camera and binoculars. No water slides, Mc Donalds, arcades are found around the lake. You will find Islands - Miles of Open Shoreline - Beaches - Mountains and Vintage homes blending in along the rocky wooded shoreline. You can actually visit and explore some of the islands. Kayaks and Canoes out number boats and jet skis are a rare site. The average boat size on the lake is 18 to 24 feet as compare to Winnipesaukee 40 and 45 footers.  Yes you do have a few attractions, Sandwich town center is an artist community and you have the Sandwich Fair in the fall. Holderness is home to the only restaurant on the lake plus a must visit to Squam Lake Science Center where you can view wildlife in its natural surroundings. If you have never crossed or seen a covered bridge at the south end of Little Squam you will find a beautiful example.  Homes range in price, $800,000 to $6 million and the architecture is typically  an Adirondack. There are two marinas on the lake one in Holderness and the other just as you cross the covered bridge.  Head up the hill after crossing the bridge and you will find a new green community that blends in with the lake. Perfect location to enjoy the lake and call home. Squam River Landing a sustainable green community with walking trails and access to the marina.

Personally the fishing is better on Winnipesaukee but I'd make Peaceful Squam Lake my home and destination. .

Squam Lakes Facts and Lakefront Real Estate

Squam Lake is a lake located in central New Hampshire, south of the White Mountains,

Squam Lake was originally called Keeseenunknipee, which meant "the goose lake in the highlands". The white settlers that followed shortened the name to "Casumpa", "Kusumpy" and/or "Kesumpe" around 1779. In the early 19th century, the lake was given another Abenaki name, Asquam, which means "water". Finally, in the early 20th century, Asquam was shortened to its present version, Squam.

The 1981 film On Golden Pond was filmed in the town of Center Harbor on Squam Lake.[2] There is one tour boat service offered by the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center, based in Holderness, that will show visitors where all the filming locations are situated, as well as items of natural significance.

Squam Lake is a nesting site for loons and is a good place to see them in breeding plumage during the summer months. Bald eagles and great blue herons are also known to nest on the lake.

The lake is classified as a cold- and warmwater fishery, with observed species including rainbow trout, landlocked salmon, lake trout, lake whitefish, smallmouth and largemouth bass, chain pickerel, horned pout, and white perch.

Squam Lake has about 30 named islands and numerous smaller, unnamed islets. The named islands are:

Basin Island Birch Island Bowman Island Carnes Island Chocorua (Church) Island Duck Island Great Island Groton Island High Haith (at 243 acres (98 ha), the largest island, bridged ) Hoag Island Hubble Island Kate Island Kent Island Kimball Island Laurel Island Little Loon Island (nesting site to bald eagles ) Long Island Loon Island Merrill Island Mink Island Mooney (or Moon) Island Mouse Island Otter Island Perch Island Potato Island Sheep Island Three Sisters (three separate islands) Utopia Island Yard Island

Squam Lake: Lakefront property buyers Guide New Hampshire

Holderness, Sandwich, Ashland, Center Harbor, Moultonborough are surrounding towns.
Squam Lake is the second largest lake in New Hampshire  with a total area of over 6,700 acres. The 1981 film On Golden Pond  was filmed on Squam Lake and the Squam Lake Science Center is located in Holderness.  I have fond memories of the Squam Lake Science Center. Every year our family  would hike up Rattlesnake Mountain in Sandwich and then head over to the Squam Lake Science Center .  Salmon Fishing rocks on this lake ( big salmon ).   Unlike most of the lakes, Squam Lake is not home to a shoreline packed with cottages. You will find open shorelines with large family estates and an occasional Moose walking the shoreline.   A State Boat Ramp is located in Holderness next to the Science Center with easy access to Big Squam Lake and Little Squam.

Time to build memories with a lake home of your own!

Time to build memories with a lake home of your own!

Ashland, at the southern end Little Squam ( 408 acres ) , Little Squam lake feeds directly into big Squam. At the southern end of the lake you pass under a covered bridge to the Squam River and Marina.  Ashland has a small downtown area with restaurants, groceries and a hardware store.

Holderness is located with access to  Big Squam Lake and Little Squam Lake, Little Squam is the place to be in the winter months, they plow a air strip to land your plane and plow a path around the entire lake for skating.  Holderness has a small downtown with a restaurant, marina offering boat sales, rentals and fuel plus a great sandwich shop.

Sandwich is one of the largest towns in Carroll County. Along with having miles of shoreline you have an active artist community in the center of town and is home to the Sandwich Fair.  Historic buildings and plenty of open space.

Center Harbor, quiet New England town, the village area is located on the shores of Winnipesaukee.

Moultonborough, my favorite hiking trails are the Red Hills up to the fire tower or Castle in the Clouds where you can enjoy lunch at the famed castle.  The center of town is located off Route 25.

There are over 30 islands within the boundaries on Squam Lake. Many are owned by the association and visitors are welcome.

Squam Lake Real Estate prices range $450,000 for a seasonal 1 bedroom cottage to country estates built in the 1920's priced to $8 million. Most homes are priced in the $2.5 to $4.5 million dollar range.  Homes on this lake offer privacy with lots up to 25 acres and shorelines may reach 1000 or more feet. Much of the shoreline is rocky with a sandy bottom and the lake is surround by mountains for spectacular views and sunsets.

If you are looking for a turn of the century large lake experience ( seldom do you see a jet skis  ) Squam Lake should be your first choice. The typical home is a rustic Adirondack or country farm house. Call and we can keep you up to date with new listings on Squam. squam lake real estate
