Newfound and Sunapee are two of the most popular lakes in New Hampshire. They are both just over 4000 acres with ski areas just minutes away and great state parks. No boating restrictions and salmon and lake trout can be found in both lakes. Getting to the lakes is easy, Sunapee is minutes off Interstate 89 and Newfound is minutes off Interstate 93. Both are about 45 minutes to Manchester Regional Airport.
Newfound Lake is a glacial lake with an average depth of 74 feet and maximum depth of 182 feet. It is one of the cleanest lakes in the country. The lake water completely turns over twice monthly.
A drive around the lake you will find cottages, lovely estates a small commercial area plus a scenic ledge you drive along where the mountain meets the lake. Bristol a quaint New England town is on the southern shore of the lake and just 10 minutes to the north is the college town of Plymouth. Tons of restaurants and all your shopping needs can be found between the two towns. 10 minutes from the lake is Ragged Mountain Ski and Golf Resort. Ragged has an 18 holes golf course and the only 6 passenger high speed lift in NH. New to the area is a new high speed quad to a second peak. This is one of my favorite ski areas, no lines, family atmosphere and plenty of great terrain to enjoy. Homes around the lake are priced $650,000 to $1.7 million and sell quickly. Hebron and Bridgewater on the northern shores of the lake have some of the lowest property tax rates in NH.
Lake Sunapee has an average depth of 37 feet and a maximum depth of 105 feet and the water is crystal clear. Sunapee a destination lake since the early 1900's is one of the most popular lakes in NH. The lake is know for excellent boating including Star Class sail boat racing in the summer and ice sailing in the winter. Most of the lake has views of Mount Sunapee and New London the Gold Coast is a college town located on the shores of Sunapee and is your destination for shopping. A drive around the lake you will not find any box stores except a Dunkin Donuts that blends into the surrounding as it had been there since 1910. Scenic towns around the lake include, Newbury, Sunapee, New London and Georges Mills. Just 30 minutes north you are in Hanover home to Dartmouth College and the Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital.
Mount Sunapee located at the western edge of the lake has 8 lifts and 173 acres of skiing. During the summer the area is host to League of NH Craftman's Fair. The major golf course in the area is Lake Sunapee Country Club in New London. Homes around the lake are priced from $850,000 to over $5 million.
My go to lake is a toss up. Both of these lakes have are similar in size and both have excellent water quality and fishing. Skiing, Golf and Shopping are convenient. Which lake is right for you?
