Squam Lakefront Buyers Guide, Squam Lake Real Estate, New Hampshire USA

Squam Lake Real Estate Squam Lake is one of the most popular  lake destinations during the summer and winter months in NH.  Don't expect tons of boat traffic or crowds of people around the lake. During the winter months you can be on the slopes of Cannon, Loon or Waterville Valley in less than 30 minutes. Squam is a quiet area you will enjoy visiting and maybe a place you would like to call home. Homes on Squam start at $800,000

Towns with Squam Real Estate For Sale, Holderness, Sandwich, Ashland, Center Harbor, Moultonborough, NH

Squam Lake is the second largest lake in New Hampshire  with a total area of over 6,700 acres. The 1981 film On Golden Pond  was filmed on Squam Lake and the Squam Lake Science Center is located in Holderness.  I have fond memories of the Squam Lake Science Center. Every year our family  would hike up Rattlesnake Mountain in Sandwich and then head over to the Squam Lake Science Center and tour the native animals in their natural settings .  Salmon Fishing rocks on this lake ( big salmon ).   Unlike most of the lakes, Squam Lake is not home to a shoreline packed with cottages. You will find open shorelines with large family estates and an occasional Moose walking the shoreline.   A State Boat Ramp is located in Holderness next to the Science Center with easy access to Big Squam Lake and Little Squam.

Ashland, at the southern end Little Squam ( 408 acres ) , Little Squam lake feeds directly into big Squam.  Small downtown area with restaurants, groceries and a hardware store.

Holderness is located with access to  Big Squam Lake and Little Squam Lake, Little Squam is the place to be in the winter months, they plow a air strip to land your plane and plow a path around the entire lake for skating.  Holderness has a small downtown with a restaurant,  great sandwich shop and the only marina on the lake.

Sandwich is one of the largest towns in Carroll County. Along with having miles of shoreline you have an active artist community in the center of town and is home to the Sandwich Fair.  Historic buildings and plenty of open space.

Center Harbor, quiet New England town, the village area is location on the shores of Winnipesaukee.

Moultonborough, my favorite hiking trail is the Red Hill or at Castle in Clouds where you can enjoy lunch at the famed castle.  The center of town is located off Route 25.

There are over 30 islands within the boundaries on Squam Lake. Many are owned by the association and visitors are welcome.

If after your visit you find Squam a place you would like to call home call us. NH has no state income or sales tax, schools are excellent and there is a very low crime rate.

Time to Sign Up for Snowmobile Safety Classes, 2014 Season

CONCORD, N.H. - Winter is closing in, and snowmobile education classes are underway across the state.  To operate a snowmobile in New Hampshire, any person age 12 or older must have either a valid Motor Vehicle Driver's License or have successfully completed an approved Off-Highway Recreational Vehicle (OHRV) Safety Education class taught by volunteer instructors trained by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.  Additionally, all children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a licensed adult when operating a snowmobile, unless they are on property belonging to their parents, grandparents or guardians.

Sign up soon if you or someone you know needs a class. There is no charge for the classes, which are usually completed in a single day.  Parents are encouraged to attend along with their children.  For a current class schedule, visit http://www.wildnh.com/OHRV/schedule.html.  New classes are added as they become available.

"Snowmobiling is a great way for families to have fun exploring the great outdoors, but riders have a responsibility to obey the rules of the trails, to be courteous and -- most of all -- to ride safely," said Captain John Wimsatt, who coordinates Fish and Game's OHRV Education Program.

Many of the trained volunteer instructors teaching the safety classes are affiliated with one of the more than 100 snowmobile clubs in New Hampshire.  "Joining a snowmobile club is a great way to learn about safe riding, help support local landowners and help maintain trails for your own and others' enjoyment," Wimsatt said.           The New Hampshire Snowmobile Association (NHSA) and its member clubs have actively promoted safe and responsible riding since 1969.  NHSA members work with Bureau of Trails staff and Fish and Game to manage over 7,000 miles of trails in New Hampshire and provide safety education to more than 1,500 riders each year.  For more information on how to become involved with a snowmobile club, visit nhsa.com

In addition to safety education, this winter Fish and Game Conservation Officers will use innovative enforcement patrols to detect and apprehend impaired snowmobile operators, enforce speed limits, deter unlawful off-trail riding and detect machines with modified exhaust.  These ongoing initiatives will help to keep the state's snowmobile trails safe for all outdoor enthusiasts during the upcoming season.

Ragged Mountain 15 minutes to Newfound Lake

New Hampshire has over 200 lakes in the lakes region and all of the lakes are just a short drive to a major ski resort or golf course.  For those who are truly ski fanatics and would like to own a lake home close to skiing there are a couple of our larger lakes that are a 10 to 15 minute commute to a major ski area.

  1. Lake Sunapee is almost slope side, this 4000 acre pristine lake is anywhere from a 5-15  minute ride to Mount Sunapee Ski Resort.  Mount Sunapee has 11 lifts and over 1500 feet of vertical drop.  Homes around the lake are priced $750,000 up.
  2. Lake Winnipesaukee our largest lake at 43,000 acres sits at the base of Gunstock Ski Resorts.  With 1400 feet of vertical this mountain is 4 seasons of fun.  Skiing, Zip Line, Segway Tours to Cross Country Ski Trail and Horse Back Riding.  The closest towns to the ski area are Gilford, Alton and  Laconia.  Home prices on Winnipesaukee start at $650,000 and go up to $13 million.
  3. Newfound Lake is one of the cleanest lakes in the United States, this spring fed glacial lake is over 180 feet deep and is just over 4000 acres.  Your commute to one of my favorite ski areas is 15 minutes to Ragged Mountain.   Ragged has a wonderful Golf Course for summer activity and is the only area in NH with a 6 passenger high speed lift.  The whole family rides on one chair. No lift lines at this 1250 foot vertical mountain.
  4. Winnisquam is also just over 4000 acres and is located just off Interstate 93.  Gunstock is a 15 minute ride from Laconia, Tilton or Belmont.  Prices start at $500,000 and go up to $1.2 million.
  5. Conway Lake is on the Route 16 corridor. This hidden gem of a lake is 1200 acres and puts you  in the Mount Washington Valley. From Conway Lake you can be slope side at Attitash or Cranmore in 20 minutes or less. Some of the best snow conditions in the state are found here.  North Conway is an adventure in itself, from all types of entertainment, outlet stores, scenic train rides to cross country skiing.  Lots to do in this area. Prices start at $450,000 up.
  6. Squam Lake our second largest lake at 6700 acres and the location of the filming on Golden  Pond  is one of the most pristine lakes in the country. This quiet lake with islands and open shoreline to explore is a 20 minute ride to Waterville, Loon or Cannon.  Waterville and Cannon are home World Cup Racing events while Loon is our largest ski resort in NH.  Vertical drop of 2100 feet and a summit elevation of 3100 feet.  12 lifts and 61 trails.  Homes start at $1.5 million.

For those of you who are snowmobile enthusiast you can park you sled in your front yard and snowmobile to anywhere in New Hampshire.

'Tis the Season to Watch for Deer on the Roads

This deer is checking out the boats?

This deer is checking out the boats?

CONCORD, N.H. - Motorists are advised to watch for deer crossing roadways this time of year, especially at dawn and dusk.  Deer are very active right now, as the mating season, or rut, is underway and bucks and does have their minds on other things than traffic!

According to New Hampshire Fish and Game Department deer biologist Dan Bergeron, a hefty percentage - almost a third - of all deer-vehicle collisions in New Hampshire occur from mid-October through the end of November (see graph at wildnh.com/Wildlife/brake_for_deer.html  In a typical year, an estimated 1,200 deer/vehicle collisions occur in New Hampshire.

A few things to keep in mind to reduce the chances of colliding with a deer on the road:

  • Be especially cautious when driving at dawn and dusk, when deer are most active.
  • Remember, deer are creatures of habit. If you have seen deer crossing the road in a certain location, slow down and use caution when driving in that area.
  • If you see one deer on the road, keep a sharp eye out for others.

"Don't get distracted watching the doe disappear into the woods," said Bergeron. "Stay alert -- her fawns or a rutting buck may be following close behind."
