Stinson Lake is located in the White Mountain National Forest. With an elevation of 1332 feet, this glacial lake is 342 acres with a maximum depth of 77 feet and an average depth of 35 feet.  The water is crystal clear with an oligotrophic rating ( best ).  The lake offer brook trout, rainbows and lake trout fishing. 

Stinson is the only lake in the White Mountain Nation Forest that allows motor boating. Hiking trails are located minutes from the lake and golf and ski areas are just a short ride away.  Stinson Lake Road from Plymouth is open year-round and there is a seasonal road coming from Exit 28 on 93. 

The lake is remote but only 10 minutes to shopping, restaurants and attractions in Plymouth and Campton. Plymouth is a college town offering trendy shops to box stores. I have lived in NH my whole life. The grandkids visited last weekend, we took them to Squam Lakes Science Center in Holderness and my first visit to the Polar Caves in Rumney, fun times.  Winter activities include some of the best snowmobiling in the area along with ice skating and cross country skiing.

Pemigewasset Lake is a 249-acre water body located minutes off Exit 23 on 93 in the towns of New Hampton and Meredith. This warm water lake has an average depth of 8 feet and a maximum of 29 feet.  There is an Island that is uninhabited called Kelley Island, a great location for blueberry picking late July early August.  

The shoreline is dotted with summer camps and year round homes.  Much of the shoreline is open with loons nesting. In the summer you will find bass fishing in the morning around the lake and the afternoon changes to slow pontoon boat cruises to water sports.  In the winter the surface turns into a village of bob houses and snowmobiling. 

In 10 minutes you can be in downtown Meredith and 30 minutes away the Outlet Stores in Tilton or skiing at Loon, Waterville, Cannon or Ragged.  You will find restaurants, hiking trails, golf and attractions minutes in any direction.

Lake Wentworth is located in the town of Wolfeboro. At 3,097 acres it is the seventh-largest lake with an average depth of 25 feet and a maximum depth of 80 feet. The lake is Oligotrophic ( best water quality ).  Lake Wentworth flows through the Smith River into Crescent Lake where you will find a boat launch and docks. Public access to the lake is Wentworth State Park.  The lake has 9 islands with seasonal public access to Stamp Act Island. The lake has rainbow trout, largemouth bass and white perch. 

Wolfeboro is the Oldest Summer Resort in the United States. The downtown is located on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee. You will find art galleries, shops, restaurants and museums in the trendy downtown area.  Wentworth is similar to Squam, you are likely to find more camps and cottages instead of new McMansions.

Squam Lake Information 

Squam Lake has been known by many names. Keeseenunknipee, then shortened to Kesumpe around 1779. In the 1800s, it was renamed to Asquam, and finally Squam. Squam was the 1981 film site for On Golden Pond. Big and Little Squam Lakes are naturally spring-fed and connected by a channel in Holderness. Big Squam is NH second largest lake at 6,791 acres, Little Squam is 408 acres. Towns around the lake include Ashland, Holderness, Sandwich, Center Harbor, and Moultonborough. The lakes have 67 islands. There are no boating restrictions and the water quality is oligotrophic, the best.  The lake has a maximum depth of 98 feet but my advice is get a lake chart to navigate the rocky bottom.  While on the water boating expect to see lots of wooded shoreline and more woods driving around the lake. Most of the turn of the century estates sit back from the water.  The boat launch is located in Holderness along with a few commercial establishments, make sure you visit the Squam Lakes Science Center. In the winter major ski resorts are 40 minutes from Holderness and don’t miss ice harvesting every January.

In short, the answer is yes of course and yes be careful.  In NH the lakes and ponds are frozen mid-December to mid-March. You are purchasing a home with the most important attribute that you can’t view, the waterfront bottom. The lake bottom can be sandy, rocky, hardpan or mucky with weeds. Just because the shoreline is sandy that does not guarantee sandy bottom swimming. Concerned what the bottom is, talk to the neighbors, get an ice auger and drill some holes in the ice to confirm you are buying a lakefront home that you will be happy to own.  ( You can not add sand per NH Shoreline rules ) 

If you are looking for an expanded inventory wait. During the winter months, many homes that did not sell in the fall are shut down for the cold winter months.  New listings and expired listing will start to come on the market at the end of March and the whole month of April into May. 

The typical winter inventory in NH is about 100 homes in the greater lakes region. In the spring the inventory will expand to 400 homes.  Additional key dates for increased inventory are Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day. 

All I can say is be patient and do your homework. You find that dream home. You want to build memories not a reflection on every visit of what you should have done.
